Fish removal begins

Tuesday, June 16,2015 — Four individuals with gill nets will begin removing fish from Gold Lake in the Bucks Lake Wilderness on June 16.
“The nets at Gold Lake will be tended,” said Kevin Thomas of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Four staff all day will be pulling nets in and out.”
The fish removal has been ordered to protect the habitat of an endangered species — the yellow-legged frog. The plan has angered many who say the action puts the frog ahead of humans; prompted a discussion of what should be considered a native species; and instilled fear about which area could be impacted next.
