Drug dogs visit Lassen High

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015 — Drug sniffing dogs came onto Lassen High School’s campus sending a statement illegal substances are not tolerated.

The event held Thursday, Feb. 12, was a collaborative effort between the high school district’s administration, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, High Desert State Prison and the probation department.

Updates given on wind storm damages

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015 — Eric Ewing, office of emergency services chief, described recent storms that wreaked havoc on the county the first weekend in February as bitter and sweet.

Bitter because of the high winds that damaged property and caused a long power outage for many residents throughout the county.

Sweet because of the rain that saturated the ground with some areas in the valley receiving up to two to five inches of rain, according to Ewing.

Veterans discussion rescheduled

Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015 — A discussion regarding the restructuring and possible relocation of the Veterans Service Office has been rescheduled.

The supervisors will hear the matter during a Tuesday, Feb. 24 meeting, rather than today’s Tuesday, Feb. 17 meeting as originally planned.

The board begins open session at 9:30 a.m. at 707 Nevada St.

Zumbathon fundraiser for Lassen High School wrestling team rescheduled

Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015 — The Zumbathon to benefit the Lassen High School wrestling team planned for last weekend was canceled due to the storm and power outages.

It has been rescheduled for this Saturday, Feb. 14.

It will be held from 10 to 11:30 p.m. at Lassen High School Student Center, with potluck and door prize drawing immediately following.

Lassen Park celebrates Presidents Day weekend with free entry

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2015 — Along with National Park Service areas nationwide, Lassen Volcanic National Park will waive entrance fees Saturday, Feb. 14 through Monday, Feb. 16 in honor of Presidents Day.

“This holiday weekend is a perfect time to enjoy your park with friends and family. Play in the snow at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center or take a stroll along snow-free Manzanita Lake,” said acting park superintendent Steve Gibbons.

For visitors age eight and older, ranger-led snowshoe walks are offered on Saturdays and Sundays through April 5. Meet at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center at 1:30 p.m. for a 1-1/2 to 2-hour walk through Lassen Volcanic’s awe-inspiring landscape.
