Lassen graduate earns doctorate

Monday, Aug. 10, 2015 — Matthew Will, a 1998 Lassen High School graduate, recently earned his doctorate in social development from The University of the Philippines, Diliman, the premier University of the Philippines, which ranks within the top 100 universities globally for development degrees.
    Will began his degree in 2010 and joined 4,300 other graduates on June 28, 2015, earning his doctorate and also earned an academic excellence award (3.96 grade point average).

Fire blackens Riverside Drive

Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 — According to a press release from the Susanville Fire Department, the cause of a vegetation fire on Riverside Drive is undetermined, but accidental in nature.
    The Susanville Fire Department, along with automatic aid from the Susan River Fire Protection District, and Cal Fire, responded to a vegetation fire at approximately 2:25 p.m. Monday, July 27.
    According to the press release, the fire burned a 40-foot by 60-foot piece of land.

Conservation incentives for working grass, range and pasturelands announced

Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced that beginning Sept. 1, farmers and ranchers can apply for financial assistance to help conserve working grasslands, rangeland and pastureland while maintaining the areas as livestock grazing lands.
    The initiative is part of the voluntary Conservation Reserve Program, a federally funded program that for 30 years has assisted agricultural producers with the cost of restoring, enhancing and protecting certain grasses, shrubs and trees to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and reduce loss of wildlife habitat. In return, the U.S. Department of Agriculture provides participants with rental payments and cost-share assistance.

Utility receives solar project update

Sunday, Aug. 9, 2015 — About a year after the Lassen Municipal Utility District board adopted the purchase power agreement, the directors received an update on the timeline of the Honey Lake solar project.
    The original PPA was approved in July of 2014.
    The agreement, which was set for 30 years, will help the district meet the California Renewable Portfolio Standard, which has state utility providers getting about 33 percent of total procurement from eligible renewable energy sources by 2020, according to the California Public Utilities Commission.

Sierra Pacific Industries purchases 101 Ranch

Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015 — Sierra Pacific Industries has purchased the 101 Ranch, located about 13 miles east of Westwood, from the Dye Creek Cattle Company of Red Bluff. The sale was expected to close Friday, July 31, according to Mark Pawlicki, director, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability for Sierra Pacific Industries.
    Pawlicki said SPI plans to manage the ranch for timber production and incorporate the timberlands into its overall long-term forest management objectives. The ranch is 2,318 acres and has 1,202 acres of timberland. The rest of the acreage is mostly grazing land and the timber company will continue the grazing leases. Also it will continue the ski lease with Lassen Community College, which operates Coppervale Ski Area, and the fishing lease on Goodrich Creek, although fishing has been suspended this year due to low water levels.
