School choice and knowing what is best for our children is tough

Aug. 10, 2010 — We are headed into the dog days of summer, but my mind is thinking it’s the fall season all because Lassen High School starts on Monday, Aug. 16. My thinking hasn’t changed on such an early start day — it’s just simply crazy. Of course, the old mantra is that the early date has to do with fall sports and the school denies it. I won’t argue that point except to say the first Grizzly home football is Friday, Aug. 28.

Shouting out a thank you to our brave firefighters

Aug. 3, 2010 — Everybody remembers the first time — it’s human nature.

Way back in 1999 I enjoyed my first summer working at the newspaper and learning my way around Lassen County when I got my first glimpse of what seems to be an unfortunate and all too frequent occurrence in our part of the country — a raging wildfire. Growing up in the city, I had no real experience with our kind of fire.

Fair brings out the very best in Lassen County

July 27, 2010 — The Lassen County Fair is much more than just carnival rides and cotton candy — it’s a chance for Lassen County residents to celebrate our community and our way of life in Northeastern California.

Once again, it’s time to congratulate all the good people who organize the fair every year and say thank you for a job well done.

It hurts to lose a quality friend of the county

July 20, 2010 — Flags were flying half-staff last week across Lassen County and the state of California in remembrance of State Senator Dave Cox who died Tuesday, July 13.

Typically when one hears the word senator, thoughts head in the direction of politician and that equates with special interest groups and a self-serving agenda.
