Bluegrass festival sends me on a journey of discovery
Tuesday, July 14, 2015 — I love the crazy things I get to ponder because I have a musician’s sensibilities. A case in point — the recent Susanville Bluegrass Festival relaunched my interest in traditional Irish music — not that bluegrass is especially Irish, but the music of the Emerald Isle can be found at the core of the bluegrass tradition — the fiddle tunes, various varieties of jigs (double jigs, slip jigs, slide jigs, etc.), reels, clog dances, hornpipes and even, I kid you not, polkas. Now take a deep breath — I have no fantasy about becoming a master of those old fiddle tunes on guitar — I have neither the hands nor the necessary inclination, but I still remain fascinated by the music just the same.
