Representatives of a sugar beet factory in Fallon, Nev. visited a site outside Standish to talk to farmers concerning the viability of growing beets in the Honey Lake Valley.

They planned to plant 2,000 acres and sell the beets for $7 a ton.

 

Remember When for Jan. 29, 2013

90 years ago

     Louis Burgurd, of Spalding, finally recovered from a series of injuries that put him out of commission for nearly a year. Burgurd fell off his barn roof and broke his left arm and several ribs. He was then diagnosed with pneumonia and the doctor ordered him not to leave his house until he was well. Ignoring the doctor’s advice, Burgurd attempt to purchase food at a nearby market and was kicked by his mule, which snapped his leg in four places.

 

Remember When for Jan. 22, 2013

90 years ago

Leland Hunsinger wrote home from Camp Lewis, explaining the path every young man should take for his future. His letter was published in the local newspaper.

Pride, responsibility and excitement, he wrote, were some of the traits basic training had instilled in him.

 

Remember When for Jan. 15, 2013

90 years ago

County residents struggled to remove the nearly 10 feet of snow that fell over a three-week period in January. The lack of manpower is hampering the distribution of food, medical supplies and warm clothing to senior citizens. Although the newspaper could not confirm any deaths, reporters announced there were rumors more than 10 people had starved to death in the northern part of the county.
