Human remains may be those of missing Doyle man
Oct. 31, 2013 — The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility human remains found in the South County area may belong to those of a man reported missing in September 2012.
According to an updated press release, no forensic evidence links the remains to those of Edgar Carrera, of Doyle, but evidence found at the scene is leading to the possibility the remains are his.
On Sunday, Oct. 27, two hunters came across what they believed to be a skull in the mountainous area approximately one mile from Constantia Road, according to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies and investigators responded to the scene and discovered what has been determined to be a human skull, along with several other bones, which appear to be consistent with those of a human. In the approximate area of the bones, a pair of pants was found as well.
Preliminary investigation showed the bone parts were scattered across a large area, which will require multiple personnel to conduct a search.
The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the forensic and anthropology units of the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with doctors and interns from the California State University, Chico Forensic Anthropology division who spent a day processing the scene.
After a full day of searching and retrieval, the sheriff’s office confirmed the remains are in fact human bones. Although the search was hampered by snow conditions, items of evidence were discovered that might possibly assist in the identification of the person.
Carrera was last seen Aug. 28, according to family members. Deputies looked in the Doyle and Milford areas, and extended their search into Westwood and Plumas County. They also attempted to ping a Global Positioning System (GPS) signal from Carrera’s cell phone, but it had been inactive since Aug. 30. Information will be updated as it becomes available.
