Members for school oversight committees being sought
Sept. 3, 2013 — Parents of students and/or interested community members are needed for two committees within the Westwood Unified School District required by state and federal law.
These committees include a District Advisory Committee, which would consist of representatives district-wide, and a combined School Site Council and School Advisory Committee for Fletcher Walker Elementary.
Those interested in participating on the Fletcher Walker School Site Council and School Advisory Committee should attend a meeting at the Westwood High School library at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.
Adele Emershaw, superintendent/principal for the school district, said there is a lot of work to be done. Last year the School Site Council and School Advisory Committee created the Single Plan for Student Achievement for Fletcher Walker Elementary and it is the duty of council members to monitor and update the plan as needed to make sure it is being implemented correctly. Emershaw said this year council members will update the Local Education Agency Plan as well.
The district will need to set in place a plan for oversight of the Local Control Funding Formula that is part of the 2013-2014 Budget Act, said Emershaw. She is not yet sure how this will work but is in the process of researching the requirements.
The District Advisory Committee is especially important this school year because Fletcher Walker students were moved to the high school campus due to a mold issue being abated at the elementary campus. It would be helpful to have the District Advisory Committee in place to ensure the combined campuses operate smoothly. A meeting date has not yet been announced for the District Advisory Committee.
Although Emershaw submitted a letter asking the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which is the accrediting commission for schools, to postpone the site survey at Westwood High for one year, she has yet to hear back. If the Western Association of Schools will not postpone the survey, committee members will be asked to help the district make the necessary preparations for a site visit.
