High speed pursuit lands a Chico man in jail
Monday, Aug. 12 — A high-speed chase that began in Janesville, and exceeded 100 miles per hour, ended near the Westwood Cemetery after the driver fled on foot and was eventually tasered.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Skyler Michael Banner, 20, of Chico, was arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail on alleged felony charges of evasion and an outstanding warrant out of Palo Alto.
The chase began at approximately 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10 when an officer attempted to make an enforcement stop on a high-speed vehicle northbound on Highway 395 at Church Street.
Banner, who was driving a 2011 Nissan Juke SUV, allegedly failed to stop and fled northbound at speeds of 118 miles per hour, while passing through left-turn lanes, passing over double yellow lines and passing on the right shoulder. Two additional CHP officers responded and assisted in the pursuit as it transitioned to westbound Highway 36.
As the chase approached the Susanville city limits at Riverside Drive at 95 miles per hour, all CHP officers canceled the pursuit and their involvement. The Susanville Police Department and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office assumed pursuit through town.
Police officers ended their response as Banner left Susanville, while deputies continued pursuit westbound on Highway 36.
CHP began responding from Chester to assist as the pursuit approached the area.
According to the CHP, Banner suddenly slowed his vehicle and stopped east of the Goodrich Creek Bridge, east of Westwood. Banner allegedly fled on foot into the woods. CHP units, including a CHP helicopter out of Redding responded to assist.
While conducting an extensive ground search, a CHP officer found Banner walking on a dirt logging road east of the Westwood Cemetery. Banner allegedly failed to surrender and attempted to flee again, at which point the taser was deployed.
Banner was taken into custody, medically examined at Banner Lassen Medical Center and booked into jail on a $35,000 bail.
