Task force eradicates North County pot gardens
Aug. 6, 2013 — Agents with the Lassen County Narcotics Task Force recently assisted in the eradication of several marijuana grows in the North County area.
A deputy found the first grow in the Big Valley area on July 21 and the second was assistance for a warrant served at a residence in the Termo area.
According to Kevin Jones, a task force sergeant, at 7 p.m. July 21, a deputy assigned to the Big Valley area came across property located directly across Highway 299 with a marijuana grow blocked in by six foot bamboo fencing and other materials.
Upon entry into the marijuana grow, two Hispanic men took off running. Jones said after a lengthy foot chase covering approximately a quarter of a mile through other property and the highway, one of the suspects was immediately located.
The second man was found in a field about a half an hour later.
Pedro Martinez-Gutierrez, 26, and Eugenio Avendano-Hernandez, 40, were arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail. They were identified as Mexican nationals.
Based on the size of the marijuana grow, Jones said the scene was frozen and task force agents wrote and executed a search warrant July 22.
Approximately 250 marijuana plants were eradicated and miscellaneous cultivation items were seized.
In a separate case, the task force assisted with a joint warrant with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Forest Service at a Termo residence on July 31.
Jones said 80 plants were seized, and the case has been forwarded to the Lassen County District Attorney.
