May 20, 2013 — A Susanville couple lost their lives Saturday night when their single engine airplane crashed near the Auburn Municipal Airport in the Sierra foothills.
Susanville Airport Manager Steve Datema confirmed Bruce and Kathy Rhymes, of Susanville, were killed in the crash, but he couldn’t provide more information.
Ian Gregor, a public information officer for the Federal Aviation Administration, released a preliminary statement.
According to Gregor, a single-engine Cessna 170 crashed under unknown circumstances in a wooded area about 1 mile south of the Auburn airport around 9 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Two people aboard the airplane were killed.
Search crews found the wreckage around 1:45 a.m. Sunday, May 19.
“I cannot confirm a tail number until I know the victims’ next of kin have been notified,” Gregor said.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA were at the crash site Sunday. Gregor said the NTSB investigator usually posts a basic preliminary report on the agency’s website, ntsb.gov, within a week or two of an accident. However, it typically takes NTSB months to come up with a probable cause for accidents.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, an FAA spokesman said investigators found the wreckage after commercial airline pilots confirmed a distress signal coming from the aircraft’s emergency locating transmitter.
