Rotary Speech Contest to be held March 20

March 7, 2013 — Local students from ninth to 12th grade competing in the Rotary District 5190 Speech Contest will speak on the topic “Peace through Service” at the club level contest held at 6 p.m. March 20 at Lassen County Office of Education on Johnstonville Road across from the airport.

Each five- to seven-minute speech should explore the theme, “How does my service to my fellow man create peace in my home, community and the world?”

The first place finisher will receive $100, the second place finisher will receive $75 and the third place finisher will receive $50.

The top two contestants will advance to the area level contest held at the Lassen County Office of Education at 6 p.m. April 24. The first place finisher will receive $200, the second place finisher will receive $100, the third place finisher will receive $75 and the fourth place finisher will receive $50.

The winner of the area level contest advances to the District Conference held May 18 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks, Nev. The first place finisher will receive $1,000, the second place finisher will receive $750 and the third place finisher will receive $500.

Contest rules are available at your school or local Rotary club.

            Additional materials and questions can be obtained from or answered by Lassen County Superintendent of Education Richard DuVarney; Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon; Wade Workman, manager, Tum-A-Lum Lumber Company; Frank Cady; or any involved local Rotarian.
