In loving memory of Carol Hodgson

     Carol May Hodgson passed away unexpectedly Jan. 22, 2013, at 70 years of age. Carol was born in June 1942 in Susanville, Calif., moved to the valley as a young girl and graduated from Corning High School in 1960. Carol returned to Susanville with her family in 1974 where she worked as a bookkeeper for the city of Susanville for more than 10 years and then more recently for Haws, Theobald & Auman until she retired in early 2011. 

     Carol is survived by her husband of 52 years, Glenn Hodgson; her two children, Rob Hodgson and Rachel (Hodgson) Bell; four grandchildren, Zechariah, Grace, Brianna and Nathan; and four siblings, Sharon (Jackson) Price, Steven Jackson, Albert Jackson and Mary Lee (Jackson) Sherwood. 

     Carol loved to be with her grandchildren, play games, make crafts and was an active member of her sorority chapter, Laureate Theta Psi. 

     A memorial service and reception was held at Assembly of God Church in Susanville on Jan. 26. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Laureate Theta Psi scholarship fund at Lassen County Federal Credit Union in memory of Carol Hodgson.

Jack Iba

     Jack Iba, 74, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Washoe County, Nev. Jack was born in Susanville to Mary Alosi and Lorenzo Iba.

     He is survived by his daughter, Toni Iba, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and aunts, uncles and cousins of the Alosi family, of Susanville.

     There will be an informal service held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013 at his home in Susanville at 472-875 Josie Way.

Dolores C. Jones

     Dolores Catherine (Cathy) Jones passed away Jan. 23, 2013 at her home, with her family by her side. Cathy was born Oct. 13, 1947 in Tracy, Calif. to John and Dolores Kauffman. She and her husband, Wayne Jones, were married Aug. 13, 1966 in Susanville, Calif. where they made their home and raised two daughters.

     Cathy was employed at High Desert State Prison for 15 years. She was also a wonderful homemaker and a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

     She is survived by her husband, Wayne; her two daughters, Stephanie Anderson and Kimberly Jones; a sister, Madeline French; a brother, Bill Kauffman (Sue); grandsons, Wayne Anderson, Chris Jensen, Paul Anderson, Brian Anderson and Logan Sprigg; granddaughters, Jessica De Rose (Scott), Rylie Jensen and Makenna Sprigg; great-grandson, Eli De Rose; and numerous nephews and nieces.

     In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gospel Tabernacle Church.

     A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday Feb. 4, 2013.

Jerry Blaine Rankin

     Jerry Blaine Rankin, 74, died Jan. 14, 2013 at Banner Lassen Medical Center, with family at his side.

     Jerry was born Dec. 24, 1938 in Susanville, Calif. to Eugene Andrew Rankin and Henrietta Charlotte (Pace) Rankin, of Chester, Ark.

     Jerry grew up in Susanville and graduated from Lassen High School in 1956. He enjoyed and competed in track and field events for sprint and distance running. After graduation, he spent the next four years as a firefighter in the summer months for the California Department of Forestry and worked for the Collins Pine Lumber Company in Chester, Calif. as a sawmill worker.

     In 1960, he went on to serve in the United States Army at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and attended the rank of corporal. As an administrative specialist-cryptographer, he conducted background research for interdepartmental granting of top-secret clearance and researched top-secret tag files.

     After returning to Susanville from military duty, Jerry worked as an engineer for the California Department of Forestry and later transferred to San Jose, Calif. whereby he was promoted to fire captain. Jerry married his one true love, Kathryn Stewart, in 1968 and they raised two children.

     Jerry received two bachelor’s degrees from California State University, Chico in social welfare and corrections. He obtained three associate’s degrees from Lassen Community College in education, police science and correctional science.

     Jerry left the Forest Service in 1972 and moved his family back to Susanville accepting the job of correctional officer with the California Department of Corrections where he retired in 1982.

     Having time for other pursuits, he graduated from gaming school and became proficient in repairing slot machines. Over the next 20 plus years, Jerry continued his education in social work and criminal justice and began working part-time at group homes supervising and assisting troubled youth until he retired for the last time in 2008.

     Jerry always had a nomadic spirit and loved to travel with his family, traverse state parks and national forests, and spent much of his free time fishing, prospecting, inventing, bowling, playing the guitar, reading encyclopedias, completing crossword puzzles and in recent years, socializing at the casino with friends.

     Jerry is survived by his ex-wife, Kathryn Rankin; his two children and their spouses, Regina and John Schaap, of Susanville, and Lance and Michelle Rankin; and grandchildren, London and Chase, of Poway, Calif.; his niece, Linda and David Lile; two great-nephews, Jared and Cade, of Susanville; and his nephew, David Rea, of Lake Hughes, Calif.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Irma Lea (Rankin) Gleason.

     At his request, there will be no services, but his family will hold a private memorial in the spring. Condolences may be sent to The Rankin Family, P.O. Box 1885, Susanville, CA 96130.

Patrick Gentry Tobin

     Patrick Gentry Tobin passed away Jan. 22, 2013 in Reno after a long battle with cancer. Pat was born Jan. 1, 1947 in San Mateo, Calif. and raised in Ross (Marin County).

     After high school he joined the United States Army and spent two and a half years in South Vietnam (1966-1968), mostly as an infantry sergeant with the 1stCavalry. By all accounts, Sgt. Tobin led his boys with elan and brought them through some sharp fighting. He earned both a bronze star and an Army Air Medal for more than 100 helicopter assaults.

     After his service, he worked for several years as in import/export agent throughout the Far East and on the east and west coasts. Subsequently, he worked as a ranch hand and carpenter in Colorado, Nevada and California. Most recently, he worked in the Susanville area for McCourt Construction and for the Nagel family at the Happy Valley Ranch. He was also a fisherman who particularly enjoyed angling for steelhead on the California north coast.

     To his adoring nephews, Bo G. Tobin, Shea G. Tobin and Ross G. Tobin, of Denver, Colo., for whom he was ever vigilant, he was the mightiest man in the world. He will also be missed by his nieces, Elizabeth Tobin, of Seattle, Wash. and Lisa Tobin, of San Rafael, Calif.; and his nephews, John H. G. Tobin, of Petaluma, Calif. and Toby, Luke and Patrick Nemec, of Bolinas, Calif.

     Mr. Tobin was preceded in death by his father, Howard Gentry Tobin and sister, Janina Madge Tobin.

     He is survived by his mother, Jane E. Tobin, of Grand Junction, Colo.; and his brothers, Dennis G. (Bette) Tobin, of Santa Rosa, Brian G. (Patti) Tobin, of Grand Junction and Timothy G. (Mary) Tobin, of Santa Rosa.

     He was a singular man. His family will deeply miss him.

     For their special caring, we would like to thank the Nagel family, especially Shirley (Nagel) Lee and her brother, Jim Nagel. Also, Doug Sheehy, Bob Nobles, Mike McCourt and Sue Cady, of Susanville; Nick Kriel, of Paradise, Rex Branum, of Goodland, Kansas and Bill Shine, of San Francisco, who, among other friends of Pat whom we might have missed, comforted him and remained steadfast. We also thank the Veterans Administration medical personnel, both clinicians and staff, in Susanville, Reno and Sacramento, who bent every effort to care for our son, uncle, brother and friend. Thanks to all.

     No services will be held.

Frank W. Tomberlin

Pearl Harbor survivor

     Frank W. Tomberlin passed away Jan. 13, 2013 at Countryvilla Riverview, in Susanville, Calif. His wife Louise was at his side.

     He grew up in the Bay Area. After graduating high school he joined the Navy in 1940. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor on board the Ship Henley at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack.

     After being discharged from the Navy, Frank returned to the Bay Area were he met his wife, Louise Frost. At the time of his death he and Louise and been married 66 years.

     Frank was employed as a union plumber for more than 32 years before retiring. After retirement, Frank and Louise moved to Westwood, Calif. in 1973. Frank worked for Westwood High School, retiring again in 1985. After his second retirement Frank and Louise loved to travel and go on trips in their RV. They fished, camped and more.

     In 1998, Frank and Louise moved to Standish, Calif. and still continued to travel and enjoy themselves. They loved to go fishing, cut firewood, snowmobile and play cards with their many friends. He enjoyed taking rides on mountain roads, not knowing where he was but never getting lost. He was an avid 49er fan. What he loved most was being with his family and friends. He especially loved his kids and grandchildren. He loved to go to his daughter’s home for Sunday barbeques.

     Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Izabell Tomberlin, and brothers, Lewis and Bob.

     He is survived by his brother, Jack, of Susanville, and sister, Pat Lawson, of Sonoma. He is also survived by three children, Darlene and husband, Ken Capps, of Standish, Tom and wife, Jackie Tomberlin, of Salida, Calif., and Dennis and wife, Betty Tomberlin, of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; grandchildren, Denise and Mike Firbo, Leonard and Denise Tomberlin, Ron and Ryan Gilly, John and Jamie Gilly Alan and Sue Gilly, Mathew Tomberlin, Tom Tomberlin, Wesley Tomberlin, Sean Tomberlin and wife, April, and Tara and Craig Capps. Frank was blessed with 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

     The family requests in lieu of flowers to please visit a veteran and say, “Thank you” to that person. Everyone will miss you, Dad. We love you.

     Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Monica Carlene Walker

     Monica Carlene Walker, 55, died Jan. 20, 2013 in Susanville, Calif. She was born March 21, 1957 in Santa Monica, Calif.

     She is survived by mother, Billie Barnick; daughter, Amanda Shirley; brother, Keith Barnick and two grandchildren.

     Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at the Church of the Nazarene.
