Snow and gusty winds through tonight

Dec. 17, 2012 — Periods of snow will continue today, Monday, Dec. 17 with a rain and snow mix below 6,000 to 6,500 feet through this afternoon. Chain controls and travel delays will continue over the Sierra passes through tonight.

The winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. this evening.

Periods of snow will continue through tonight. A mix of rain and snow will occur near and below 5,500 feet through this afternoon. There are three to six inches forecasted through 10 p.m. above 5,500 feet with the highest totals along Highway 89 and western Lassen County. One to three inches of snow will accumulate below 5,500 feet and along Highway 395 this evening.

Snow levels will be around 5,000 feet through this afternoon falling to valley floors late Monday afternoon.

Winds are expected from the southwest at 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph. Stronger gusts to 65 mph will occur in wind-prone areas along Highway 395 south of Susanville.

Roads will remain slick and icy with chain controls and travel delays. The gusty winds will create travel difficulties for high profile vehicles along Highway 395 through this afternoon.

Snow will pose an inconvenience to travelers. Roads will become slick and hazardous with snow and ice first developing on bridges and overpasses. Motorists should slow down and use caution.
