Nov. 14, 2012 — The Lassen Community College women’s soccer team traveled to Quincy to take on the Feather River Golden Eagles Tuesday, Nov. 6 for their last Golden Valley Conference (GVC) game of the season.

The Lady Cougars needed a win to make playoffs and to possibly win the GVC title. The Lady Cougars came back to beat the Golden Eagles, 2-1.

After a slow start, a Golden Eagles’ forward knocked in a goal from about 20 yards away, giving the Golden Eagles the early 1-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Lady Cougars to answer, as Cassie Turner, of Susanville, took a deflected corner and shot the ball from 40 yards out. It hung in the air and landed perfectly in the upper left corner, past a diving Golden Eagles’ goalie.

“It was not something you see everyday,” said head coach John Roy. “It was a beautiful shot that spun, twisted and hung in the air. We are still not sure how it went into the corner so perfectly other than the hand of God.”

The two teams went in to halftime tied at one apiece.

The Lady Cougars came out of halftime wanting to make the playoffs.

“After a colorful and animated halftime pep talk, we came out actually wanting to win,” said Roy. “I just had to remind them they were a better team and they wanted this game more.”

Six minutes into the second half, Giorgia Dunne, of England, made a beautiful pass to forward Julie Schnetzer, of Austria, who found a wide open Amanda Libke, of Susanville, in front of the goal with just the Golden Eagles’ goalie to beat.

After a second of hesitation, she placed a shot in the lower right hand corner of the goal to take the lead and clinch the victory.

The Lady Cougars played great defense for the remainder of the game, stopping any attempt the Golden Eagles had to tie the game up.

“It was a great game-winning goal,” said team captain Libke. “It got the team pumped up and gave us the motivation we needed to win the game.”

“It was a great victory for our team to end conference play this way,” said Roy. “I think we have a good deal of momentum going into playoffs, if we are able to qualify after all of the standings are sorted out.”
