Smoking prohibited at this year's Uptown Halloween In May 2012 the Susanville City Council approved an ordinance prohibiting smoking during the Safe and Sane Halloween events in Uptown Susanville. This year's event takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31. Specifically, the ordinance prohibits smoking on Main Street between Weatherlow and Roop streets and the first blocks of Roop, Lassen, Gay, Union and Weatherlow streets on both sides of Main Street during the Safe and Sane Halloween celebration. This is the first event since the passage of the smoking prohibition. The Susanville Police Department (SPD) would like to remind the public of this new law and ask for their cooperation while visiting the Uptown Halloween event where children will be present. Not only is second-hand smoke hazardous to young children, it also poses a danger to the children's safety who many times are wearing costumes that may be flammable if they come into contact with hot cigarette embers. The SPD, along with many other community public health partners, urges you to remain smoke free while at this event for the safety of the children in our community. Failure to comply could result in a citation being issued for a violation of the Susanville municipal code. If you have any questions about this ordinance, contact Tom Downing, chief of police, at the SPD during regular business hours, or call 257-5603. |
