Susanville Future Farmers of America (FFA) members took home prizes from the California State Fair. Fred Minton and Ed Chappius took home high marks for their Aberdeen Angus cattle in the beef market competition, while Ronnie Saunders exhibited eighth-and tenth-place lambs.

Susanville’s major food markets, which had been closed for six weeks, reopened their doors to long lines of hungry customers.

The stores shut down because of a wage-scale controversy between employers and members of the Retail Clerk’s Union.

Forty law enforcement investigators culminated weeklong surveillance in what was called California’s largest marijuana bust at the site of Cottonwood Mountain, located just south of Antelope Lake.

Officers arrested two suspects in connection with the bust.

Acting on a tip from a deer hunter, authorities raided the plantation, confiscating 4,438 two to five-foot plants with an estimated street value of nearly $4.4 million.

The Clark Fire near Milford was finally contained after scorching several structures and blackening 41,000 acres of tinder-dry forest and rangeland. The fire, aided by 50 mph wind gusts, was described as the worst fire to hit the Plumas National Forest. It took 48 miles of fire line, 1,100 firefighters and several air tankers to extinguish the blaze.

It was hard to tell who was more excited — the students, the parents who accompanied their children or the staff members who greeted them when Meadow View School opened for the first time.

The school, one of three in Susanville, has had a troubled history since the day the ground broke for the project in July, 1990.

Those feelings were mostly forgotten, replaced by grins and exclamations of delight, as opening day approached and it became clear Meadow View was actually going to be ready for students.

Though Lassen County Air Pollution Control Officer Ken Smith gave notice of stopping open burning and detonation of munitions at Sierra Army Depot last week, he said the law gives SIAD an avenue to continue.

“They can apply for an emergency variance,” Smith said after the Thursday, Aug. 30 meeting of the Air Pollution Control Board.

“They can get it tomorrow on the signature of the (Lassen County Air Pollution Control District) Hearing Board Chairman.”

Early Tuesday morning, Aug. 28, when most Lassen County residents were sleeping, a few diehard astronomers saw the moon turn a dark red.

A lunar eclipse happens when the earth’s shadow completely covers the moon, but the entire event happens in phases. First the moon enters the penumbral shadow of the earth when the Earth blocks part, but not all, the sun’s rays from reaching the moon.

Calfire investigators are still looking into the cause of a 2.4 acre fire in the Devil’s Corral area near Goumaz Road Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Susanville Interagency Fire Center Manager Scott Henry said the first call came around 11:22 p.m., followed by several reports from people who could see smoke in the area.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were threatened. Responding agencies included Calfire personnel and one water-tender from the Susan River Fire Protection District.
