Martha “Marie” Bonini
Martha “Marie” Bonini passed away, peacefully, on Jan. 21, 2012, at the age of 89, in the Oakmont Senior Living facility, Chico, Calif. Marie was born March 6, 1922, in Jeffersonville, Ind.
She met her future husband, Jim, at a USO dance at Fort Knox, Ky. They married, and after her husband’s discharge from the Army, they moved to Santa Rosa, his hometown. Marie worked at Kushin’s Shoe Factory for many years, rising to the first-ever “Forelady” position.
At the age of 36, she quit work to stay at home to care for her family. In 1967, they moved to Susanville, Calif. Camping, traveling and playing games with her family were among her favorite things to do. She was an excellent seamstress, made the best-ever biscuits and gravy and was an avid dog-lover.
For many years, she was very active in the Calvary Baptist Church and the Christian Women’s Club. In later years, she became a devoted daily helper at the Lassen Senior Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her parents Thurman and Martha Dobson; sister, Gladys; brother, Charles; and granddaughter, Marli.
She is survived by her sister, Anna Lynch, of Jeffersonville, Ind.; daughter, Andria Cuypers and husband, Richard, of Susanville; daughter, Sheila McMurphy and husband, Tom, of Chico; daughter, Gloria Bagby and husband, Walt, of Susanville; son, Jimmie Bonini and wife, Kim, of Magalia; son, Daren Bonini and wife, Lanie, of Okinawa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A private burial will be held at a later date.

Irvine “Stretch” L. Nicholson
Irvine “Stretch” L. Nicholson died peacefully at home surrounded by family on Jan. 28, 2012 of congestive heart failure. He was 86 years old.
The son of Clara Bell Trout and Willie “Bill” Pearl Nicholson, “Stretch” was born on July 26, 1925 and raised in Markum, Ore. He was a graduate of Molalla High School and Lassen Junior College, Susanville, Calif. He lived for many years in Susanville where he worked for the California Department of Corrections at Susanville.
Stretch married Mable 17 years ago and they made their home in Sherwood, Ore. They enjoyed their beautiful garden and traveled to many places. Recently, Mable and Stretch moved to the Seattle area. children; step-children and grandchildren:
Stretch is survived by his wife, Mable M. Nicholson, of Auburn, Wash.; daughters, Mary Pyle, of Tigard, Ore., Susan L. Eilts, of Newberg, Ore.; granddaughter, Laurie Pyle, of Tigard, Ore.; grandson, Thomas David Eilts, of Atlanta, Ga.; great-grandson, Devin Eilts; stepson, Ronald Englund, (wife Brenda and family); step-granddaughter, Sherry Smith, (husband Gary and family); step-grandson, Kenneth Hirst, (wife Debbie, who was Stretch’s loving nurse and family); and step-grandson, Steven Hirst, (wife Lisa and family).
Donna Frances Young
Donna Frances Young, of Grass Valley died on Dec. 11, 2011 at the age of 77. She was born and raised in Susanville, Calif. A small town girl who was seeking bigger adventures, she attended the University of California, Berkeley where she joined Alpha Gamma Delta graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1955.
In the following years, she worked in several different jobs, most notably as an elementary school teacher in Merced, Calif. It was her love of children that became the focus of her life after she married Gene Young in 1959 and started her own family while residing in San Francisco, Calif.
She chose to return to small town life, when she moved with her husband and three children to Grass Valley, Calif. in 1976. Donna was a beloved mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her gentle nature, sense of humor and fun, and engaging intellect.
Donna is survived by her brother, Dr. Lloyd Lambert and sister-in-law Ora Marie Lambert, of Cayucos, Calif.; her son, Dr. Mark Young and daughter-in-law Roni Schwartz, of San Francisco; daughters, Jill Woods, of Grass Valley, and Pamela Majteles and son-in-law Robert Majteles, of Piedmont, Calif.; as well as her grandchildren, Miles Young, of San Francisco, Emma and Lindsey Woods, of Grass Valley, and Sophie, Lily and Joshua Majteles, of Piedmont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Young; her father, Milton Lambert, of Eureka, Calif.; and mother, Amelia, and stepfather, Eber Bangham, of Susanville.
Donna will be laid to rest in Lassen Cemetery in Susanville.
Caroline Margret Lyford
Caroline Margret Lyford, 76, of Standish, died Jan. 30, 2012 in Reno, Nev. She was born Aug. 12, 1935 in California.
Caroline is survived by her brother, John Bradley; son, Charles Kevin Day; daughter, Toni Day; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Ricky Day.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 18, 2012 at Standish Bible Church followed by a Celebration of Life at Ketcherside Trucking on Alexander Lane in Standish.
