120 years ago   

The plank walk to Hall’s Addition is getting decidedly shaky, particularly where the water flows under it at the bridge.   

L. Knudson, chairman of the board of supervisors, didn’t come in on snowshoes this time. He reports that Antelope Grade is in good condition and Willow Creek is now blooming like a rose again. With an abundance of water, he predicted everyone will have good crops this year.

70 years ago   

The Lantz Custom Mill arrived in Susanville by truck and was transported to its location near the McDow Mine on Diamond Mountain.   

Construction work began immediately clearing the mill site and laying pipeline from the springs.   

People on the streets of Susanville saw the first of a number of shipments of equipment from the custom mill pass through town.   

The first of nearly 15 tons of materials consisted mainly of pipe, motors, shafts and miscellaneous equipment needed for the construction project.

Sale of the Hotel Mt. Lassen on the corner of Main and Lassen streets to a San Francisco businessman was announced last week. The hotel had been operated for a number of years by a group of Susanville businessmen.

30 years ago   

North Street residents won a victory on the Old French property when the Susanville City Council followed a planning commission recommendation not to rezone the property.   

A dozen local homeowners argued that the construction of a 22-unit multiple resident dwelling would substantially alter the charter of the neighborhood and create problems with traffic and waste disposal.

20 years ago   

The “60 Minutes” film crew worked to complete an upcoming segment of the popular news program regarding the Ed Murin controversy.   

The producer complained that many Susanville residents declined to be interviewed for the program, but that much of the information used was gleaned from official reports and the local newspaper.

10 years ago   

Susanville defense attorney Mark Nareau and Lassen County District Attorney Robert Burns frequently work different sides of the aisle in the county’s courtroom.   

But the case of Westwood resident Larry Ingwersob Jr. thrust both Nareau and Burns on the horns of an ethical dilemma.

Five years ago   

The Lassen Municipal District Board will consider spending up to $10,000 for extra legal help on the Arrowrock Hydroelectric project because of a motion Kan We Help filed with a federal agency. The LMUD Board will hold a special meeting to discuss a motion to intervene.

Real live ghost hunters toting armloads of high tech electronic equipment inundated the historic Mt. Lassen Hotel starting Friday, April 17, and news of their arrival spread fast.     

The hotel was swarming with curious locals during its  Ghostbusters Ball event that evening, which kicked off an entire weekend of the hotel being taken over by professional ghost-hunting teams.    

Flocks of guests filled the hotel bar and lobby, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the spirits rumored to haunt certain areas of the hotel when members of hotel management led them in small groups through tours of paranormal hotspots in the building and areas where staff have claimed to experience strange activity.
