Nancee Joanne Evkovich

Nancee Joanne Evkovich died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at Renown Hospital in Reno, Nev., of renal failure after a long battle with congestive heart disease.

Nancee was born in Westwood, Calif., on Oct. 28, 1933, the only child of  Rodney Evkovich and Violet Jane Allan. As a girl, Nancee lived in both Westwood and Susanville. She attended Susanville High School and later the University of California. While living in the San Francisco Bay area, Nancee married and had one son, Scott Lee Stanley.

Nancee became a corrections officer and returned to Susanville where she worked at the California Correction Center for many years. Nancee was an excellent marksman and was one of the early women to attain the rank of Sergeant at CCC.

Nancee was a long time Susanville resident who loved the crisp clean air and the beautiful countryside of the Sierra Nevada. She loved animals and most of her dogs and cats were strays that she adopted.

Like her mother before her, Nancee was a long time member of Masonic women’s organizations. She was a member of the Order of the Amaranth, Rainbow Girls, and served the order of the Eastern Star as Susanville’s Worthy Matron for two consecutive years, 2004 through 2005.

Nancee was preceded in death by her father and mother Rodney and Violet Evkovich and her son Scott Lee Stanley.

She is survived by her first cousins, Kathleen Williams, Valerie McClain, Sandra Olsen, Richard Allan, Claudia Vicino, James Allan, Michael Allan, and David Allan and her second cousins Frances Porta and Linda McCracken.

Her funeral took place at the Walton’s Colonial Mortuary in Susanville on Saturday, Feb. 6.  Burial will privately take place at a later date.

Barbara Long

Barbara Long died peacefully Jan. 31 in the embrace of her son and grandchildren. Her death followed complications from anesthesia and surgery required for a broken leg.

Barbara was born in Vallejo on Dec. 14, 1913, to Fred and Mabel Dickey. Her sister, Dorothy, was born four years earlier. Barbara attended Tamalpais High in Mill Valley and College of Marin. She married Cyril Vassar of Hopland and their son Richard was born in 1943. In 1953 she married Phil Long of Susanville. Together they ran Hill’s Market and lived in Susanville for 45 years. In 1990 they moved to Sonoma. where Barbara lived until her death.

Barbara adored and was adored by her family. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life. She was a seamstress extraordinaire, avid bridge player, dedicated shopper and an artist at heart. She loved to entertain in the gracious style of her generation and no recipe was too complicated.

She traveled in Europe, Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii. Barbara loved with all her heart. The recipients were treated to her radiant smile, absolute loyalty and enveloping grace. Her relationship with God was profoundly personal and she found great joy in her church community. We believe, however, that her greatest love may have been chocolate (dark).

Barbara is survived by her son Richard Vassar; grandchildren Tonya Santens (Doug Anderson), Monique Weese (Dennis), Richard Vassar Jr. (Merrilee), Jada Alexander (Charles); niece Melissa Yates (Sayre); 10 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and one great-niece.
