He loved a good joke and enjoyed telling you a wild story. Hugh was proud of his Navy life. He was a Hardhat Driver and a Machinist Mate for the 7th fleet during WWII. He was privileged to be in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the Japanese surrender. He was also in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, where his ship was hit twice by kamikaze aircraft. The ships he served on were the USS California and the USS Salamaun CVS96.
