Westwood boys' basketball sweeps tournament at home
Boasting a 16-point advantage at the half, the Lumberjacks kept the pressure high throughout the final quarters of the game.
Derick Vega was on fire with 22 points, followed by Raymon Payton with 12, Josh Yeates with 10, Dalton Stadelman had 9, Ernesto Flores with 6, Shawn Peters and Dustin Cowen had 4 each, and Gary Ponciano took 3.
In the second game of the tournament the Lumberjacks went head to head with the Surprise Valley Hornets. The Jacks walked away with a 10-point lead and a score of 69-59.
High score went to Stadelman with 22 points on the game, Payton with 16, Yeates had 14, Vega with 11, Flores had 5 and Shawn Peters had 1.
The Lumberjacks then met the Greenville Indians on Friday, Dec. 2 with a 44-15 win.
The Jacks held the Indians to 2 points in the first quarter, to Westwoods 10. Greenville wasn’t going to back down easy and turned up the defensive heat holding the Lumberjacks to 6 in the second quarter.
The strong Greenville defense wasn’t enough to overtake the Lumberjacks and the Jacks ran away with the lead in the second half.
Yeates had the high score with 15 points, Payton had 8, Shawn Peters and Stadelman took 5 each, Vega had 4, Ponciano had 3 and Cowen and Flores both had 2 on the game.
In the final game of the tournament the Lumberjacks edged out the Biggs Wolverines 50-44.
Biggs came out strong in the first half holding the Jacks with a lead of 29-25. Westwood answered in the last half turning up the defensive juice and pouring on the offense, to grab 25 points to Biggs’ 15.
Vega had 18 points on the game, Payton with 15, Yeates took 9, Stadelman had 6 and Johnny Peters had 2.
The Lumberjacks 7-1 will now travel to face the Downieville Warriors who post a 0-1 record on Tuesday, January 6.
