Johnson excels at Nor Cal finals

Johnson is the first schools athlete to qualify in three events. Lassen College's Angel Johnson became the school's first athlete to qualify for the California Community College Track and Field Championships in three events.

The freshman from Oakland will compete this weekend at the state meet in Sacramento in the shot put, discus and hammer following her performance at the Nor Cal Championships Friday, May 11 in Salinas.

Two athletes have qualified in two events for Lassen, including distance runner Dolores Bergmann (1998-99).

"It's great that she made it in three events. Angel has got a real chance to medal in two of them," Lassen coach Ross Brosius said. "The competition is obviously going to be toughest she has seen."

Johnson took second in the shot put with throw of 40-11 1/4 - a new school record. She finished just behind Shickola Ricks of Merced at 41-1.

A personal-best hurl of 123-6 gave Johnson fifth in the discus, and she finished fifth in the hammer with a throw of 138-10.

Johnson entered the meet consistently ranked throughout the year as one of the state's top field athletes.

Her teammate Maria Sampang took 11th in the shot put at 34-2 1/4, 10th in the discus at 107-10 and ninth in the hammer at 110-0.

Johnson and Sampang alone led the Cougar women to a third-place finish in the Golden Valley Championships last month.

Tim Lembach took 10th in the hammer at 137-3.

Steve Nehls finished 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:08.25.

Lembach and Nehls failed to qualify for the state meet.

"Overall we did as well as I expected (at the Nor Cal Championships)," Brosius said. "It's an achievement just to get there."
