Missing person may be identified this week
U.S. Forest Service searchers found the body almost seven miles from the remote, heavily forested area where Undersheriff Si Bollinger found Wiltrude Moritz’s 1991 Mazda at 8:43 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30.
Bollinger was out in the area of the Hamilton Repeater, 6.9 miles from Fredonyer Snow Mobile Park off Highway 36 between Susanville and Westwood.
The sheriff’s department checked the 874TYN Nevada license plate number on the Mazda and confirmed the car was one Moritz could have been driving.
“The vehicle appeared to have become disabled some time ago,” according to a sheriff’s department press release.
The sheriff’s department organized the search and called hospitals and surrounding agencies and no one had heard of anyone picking Moritz up, Bollinger said.
Lassen County’s Search and Rescue Team began looking for her early on Thursday, May 31. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office sent an investigator to join the team in the effort.
Searchers followed numerous faint foot prints. They found Moritz’ purse next to a dirt road about five miles from the Mazda, but had to call off the effort when darkness fell.
When the search resumed early on Friday, June 1, forest service personnel joined search and rescue members and found the body about 1-1/2 miles from the location where the purse was found.
Moritz suffered from dementia and known medical conditions. She was last seen on May 13 pumping gas in Reno. She was described as 5-feet 2-inches tall, weighing 143 pounds with silver hair, wearing a white v-neck shirt, black pants and powder blue tennis shoes.
“There are no signs of foul play at this time,” the press release said. “Positive identification will be made by a medical examination,” the results of which were expected on Monday, June 11, after the paper went to press.
