Site development committee meets to discuss future of Livestock Pavilion
The committee discussed how to construct a temporary structure for this year’s livestock auction held during fair week and the demolition of the burned building destroyed in a fire on Saturday, April 21.
However, the fair is still waiting to hear from the insurance company before much work can be done, but Fair Manager Jim Wolcott said the fair should have information tomorrow, Wednesday, May 9.
In order to prepare for this year’s livestock auction the committee discussed putting up portable tents and bleachers.
People in the community have offered their services and equipment to help demolish the building and Wolcott said someone has also donated gravel and people in neighboring counties have also offered to help.
When demolition begins, Wolcott said it should take a couple of days to complete the project.
Wolcott said there are many ideas right now for the re-building of the pavilion and the fair will go slow and try to get a plan together. It may take at least a year to decide what it is going to do and develop a master plan.
It will take time to decide what the fair, kids and community need, he said.
Some of the ideas include using the stuff that survived the fire including a section of seating made of pine.
In the meantime, the committee will be holding more meetings and Wolcott said at some point in time there may be a public input meeting.
The Fair Advisory Board and the Lassen County Board of Supervisors must approve any recommendations or decisions.
The Livestock Pavilion was built in the 1940s. Last week, four boys, three 13-year-olds and one 14-year-old were arrested on charges of alleged arson, alleged trespassing, alleged burglary and alleged vandalism.
Wolcott said he would like to say again that the Susanville Fire Department and the Susanville Police Department did a good job in the investigation and the community’s support has been great.
