Cox wins state

Brett Cox of Susanville pinned four opponents with ease on his way to winning a state amateur wrestling title at the state championships earlier this month. A 14-year-old eighth grader at Diamond View School, Cox needed just 20 seconds to pin his first opponent at the state meet and followed with 41 and 58-second pins to advance to the championship match against a defending state champions. Cox then in only 48 seconds nailed down his first state championship.

"I'm very proud of Brett," said Gene Chittock, who has been Cox's coach for the past 10 years and is the president of the Lassen Youth Wrestling Association. "At the start of the year, we sat down and established some specific goals with Brett, and one was to win a state title."

Cox said he attributes much of his success to the training regime developed by Lassen College coaches Alonzo Nalls and Joe Arminas, and the association's coaching staff.

Cox has amassed a 31-0 record, including 30 pins.

"Each coach brought to the table knowledge, skill and an understanding of Brett's abilities," Chittock said.
