Lassen College's women's basketball team champions

The Lady Cougars ran the table in the GVC after serving as the conference doormat last year. "It feels good. We put a lot of hard work into making this a winning program again," said Lassen head coach Mark Nareau, who underscores the recruiting help of assistant coach Kalani Lizares.

Ranked sixth in the north and 11th in the state, Lassen finished the regular season at 24-5 and 10-0 GVC.

Although the playoff seedings were not available at press time, the Lady Cougars are awarded with a first-round bye and second-round home game on Tuesday, Feb. 27 or Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

During the final conference stretch last week, Lassen beat Shasta 76-57, College of the Siskiyous 65-46 and College of the Redwoods 74-52. Jasmere Kirby led the team in scoring in every game, pouring in a combined 61 points.

Kirby was named the conference MVP, and Jamie Wagner and Alyson Thurman were selected to the all-conference team. Honorable mention went Melissa Bunker, McKenzie Harrigan and Janelle Mack. Nareau received GVC Conference of the Year honors.

"We're real well right now and good defense. We feel good about our postseason chances," Nareau said.

Lassen led the conference in scoring (74.5 ppg) and defense (54.5 ppg).

The Cougar men defeated Redwoods in overtime to share the GVC crown with Shasta.
