Westwood basketball team wins again

Westwood High School's boys' basketball enters its fine tuning stage before the postseason after rolling to four easy victories last week.

The Lumberjacks (18-2, 8-1) remained on track for a rematch with Portola, piling up three league wins and a non-league victory. Westwood buried Downieville 80-47 at home Monday, Jan. 30 and followed with wins over Herlong 87-45, Downieville 99-61 and Cascade Christian 51-36.

"We're just trying to get playoff ready," Westwood head coach Phil Bryant said. "We made some adjustments on the fly in those games and did some different stuff to find out what we need to do in the playoffs. We need to work being more focused at the start of games. This team tends to come out flat and we can't afford to do that in the playoffs."

Westwood is on course to land the Northern Section's top seed in Division VI and can afford not to win the feather River League.

Portola stands in the way of a share of the FRL crown. Westwood battles the Tigers on the road Thursday, Feb. 15 to cap the regular season.

"We want a part of the title, but we've got to make sure we win our games before facing Portola," Bryant said.

Westwood travels to Loyalton Wednesday, Feb. 7, and hosts Greenville Friday, Feb. 9 and Chester Tuesday, Feb. 13.
