March 27, 2013 — On Thursday March 21, six members from the Susanville FFA Chapter were awarded the Golden State degree. A reception and the ceremony were held at California State University, Chico. More than 600 people attended this prestigious event, which honored the work and dedication of many north-state agriculture students.

 

County squanders $324,000 grant

March 26, 2013 — A question by a Lassen County Supervisor regarding an update on grants administered by the county’s Department of Planning and Building Services started the wheels of controversy turning.

According to the staff report included with the board packet, the county had not administered a $324,000 housing rehabilitation grant to be used in the South County. None of the money has been spent, and the grant expires June 30, 2013. Anderson said the county received the grant funding in August 2011.

  

Two arrested on alleged drug charges

March 26, 2013 — A high-risk felony traffic stop by the Lassen County Narcotics Task Force resulted in the arrest of two Susanville men.

  

New fire fee bills delayed

March 26, 2013 — According to George Runner, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association formally served the California State Board of Equalization, Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and Department of Justice with a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state’s fire prevention fee.

“The wheels of justice grind slowly, but I’m pleased that this vitally important lawsuit is moving forward,” said Runner. “Recent revelations regarding the state’s misuse of fire fee dollars have only strengthened our case that the fire fee is really an illegal tax.”

  

Cuts force closure of Herlong Head Start in May

March 26, 2013 — Twenty Herlong preschoolers are about to lose their only affordable preschool. As of May 22, Herlong’s Head Start center will close its doors due to sequestration cuts.

In an email correspondence, Brenda Poteete, executive director of Sierra-Cascade Family Opportunities, the agency that administers the local Head Start, wrote sequestration cuts amount to more than $406 million nationwide from Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
