California voter registration deadline is May 19

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 — With only one week left before the May 19 deadline to register to vote in the June primary election, Secretary of State Debra Bowen is reminding Californians to register to vote so they can weigh in on important decisions about public records, veteran housing and who runs local government.

“With the deadline to register to vote almost here, now is the time to get it done and check it off your to-do list,” said Bowen, California’s chief elections official. “Registering to vote is now easier than ever for eligible Californians, so there is no need to wait.”

National park hosts vehicle-free weekend May 16 through 18

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 — You are invited to hike, bike, walk or run along the Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway May 16 through May 18 before the road opens to through traffic for the season.

"I am incredibly excited to announce that visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy our spectacular scenery along 30 miles of road without vehicles," said Superintendent Darlene M. Koontz. “Designating a weekend as vehicle free allows our visitors to experience the park in a new and fun way.”

High school claims Credence ownership

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 — Newly hired legal counsel for the Lassen Union High School District is requesting the purchase and sale of the Credence High School property for a new community swimming pool not proceed until current legal ownership can be determined.

A letter from attorney Tom Barth will be sent to Honey Lake Valley Recreation Authority administrative officer Jared Hancock and Susanville School District Superintendent Jason Waddell regarding the matter as the high school district believes it is the rightful owner of the property, not Susanville School District.

Remains found near Canyon Dam

Tuesday, May 13, 2014 — Bones discovered by mushroom hunters near Canyon Dam last month have been determined to be human.

Plumas County Sheriff’s Investigations Sgt. Steve Peay said the identity of the person was still unknown as of Monday, May 5.

He said the bones are being sent for DNA testing.

“We are treating this as a suspicious death, obviously,” Peay said.
