Wednesday, Nov. 5 — Lassen County voters overwhelmingly approved term limits for members of the Lassen County Board of Supervisors in the Tuesday, Nov. 4 General Election, according to unofficial results from the Lassen County Clerk’s Office.

Lassen County Clerk Julie Bustamante said 1,541 ballots — provisional ballots, ballots dropped off at the polls or the clerk's office and damaged ballots — remain to be counted, and could affect the final election results. She said her office will begin canvassing the ballots Thursday, a process that usually takes a week or two in Lassen County although a report is not due at the secretary of state's office until 28 days after the election.. She said the results of the election will not be final until the canvassing is completed.

Final data show 17.8 million voters registered for today's election

Secretary of State Debra Bowen recently published the final pre-election report that shows 17,803,823 Californians are now registered to vote.

The official voter registration report shows the total number of registered voters has increased by 517,940 since this time four years ago.The percentage of voters with no political party preference has also continued to tick up, going from 20.3 percent in 2010 to 23.3 percent now.

While the statewide voter registration database is updated daily, California law requires voter registration updates 60 and 15 days before each general election. After the 58 county elections officials certify their voter data, the Secretary of State compiles all data into a statewide report and offers various dissections by political district and political party.

Duerksen attends training for Bakken oil

Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 — Forest Duerksen, the fire chief for the Westwood Fire Department, took part in hands-on field training exercises Oct. 2- through 22 designed to teach emergency responders how to manage incidents related to crude oil trains. The training was underwritten by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and held at the Transportation Technology Center in Pueblo, Colorado, which is the railroad industry’s private training and research center.

“The training made me feel more confident. I got to be incident commander on one of the training scenarios, and that is where I will be if we have an incident. It helped me to make sure I am doing things right and brought up considerations I had not thought about,” said Duerksen.

Supes, residents discuss pot gardens

Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 — County staff will be bringing back information for the board of supervisors to review and possibly update the medical marijuana ordinance.

The matter was placed on the supervisors’ agenda after residents in Lake Forest voiced concerns during an October meeting about a large marijuana grow in the subdivision off Eagle Lake Road.

Residents who stand on both sides of the issue attended a study session held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 28 at the Veterans Memorial Hall.
