Man arrested after failing to yield

Tuesday, Sept. 1 — Susanville Police Department officers arrested a man following a short pursuit.

At about 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in a parking lot near a motel on Main Street on a white GMC pickup with stolen license plates attached to the vehicle, according to a press release from the Susanville Police Department.

Jessy Richards, 34, of Susanville, allegedly failed to yield to officers and led them on a pursuit through residential streets in the northwest area of town. Richards stopped the vehicle in the 900 block of Paiute Lane and allegedly attempted to flee on foot, before being taken into custody, according to the release.

Labor Day weekend offers great camping

Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015 — The commemoration of Labor Day results in a long weekend as summer weather begins to fade. This extra day makes a camping trip worthwhile and because we already live in the mountains a multitude of campgrounds are located nearby.
During the summer months campers from out of the area and even out of state travel to the Lassen and Plumas national forests on vacation. Yet locals don’t have to take vacation time to be refreshed. The Lassen forest encompasses 1,059,596 acres and has 36 developed campgrounds while the Plumas forest covers 1,171,183 acres with 48 developed campgrounds.
Camping close to home has many benefits, according to Westwood resident Kippy Mayne. It’s an opportunity to step away from your daily routine and the drudgery of chores. It provides a chance to enjoy the beauty of the area in which we live. It does not require a lot of time, effort and planning.

State exceeds conservation mandate

Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 — Despite continued hot conditions, Californians surpassed June’s conservation rate and reduced water use by 31.3 percent during July, exceeding Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s 25-percent mandate for a second consecutive month since the new emergency conservation regulation took effect.
For June and July, the cumulative statewide savings was 29.5 percent. Saving water in the hot summer months is critical to meeting the state’s overall 25-percent savings goal through February 2016, as the summer is when the greatest amount of water is traditionally used, particularly on outdoor ornamental landscapes. State officials urged residential water users to keep up their efforts to conserve.

Constituents tell LaMalfa they want to see results

Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 — District 1 Congressman Doug LaMalfa met with a small but feisty group of constituents during a town hall meeting Monday, Aug. 24 at Jensen Hall.
An estimated 50 mostly conservative residents attended the meeting — some Republicans, Tea Party supporters, a couple sporting Oath Keepers garb and at least one Democrat.
The constituents complained about the do-nothing Congress, the passage of the Affordable Care Act, ISIS, government shutdowns, the “almost daily” erosion of citizens’ constitutional rights, cloud seeding by Pacific Gas and Electric, the problems with the Veterans Administration, Republican leadership in both the House and the Senate, President Barack Obama’s non-impeachment, why there are two Republican candidates now running for president who, like Obama, are not American citizens, the media’s influence in politically correct speech, anchor babies, the $15-per-hour minimum wage and gay marriage.
