The plank walk to Hall’s Addition was getting decidedly shaky, particularly where the water flows under it at the bridge.

L. Knudson, chairman of the board of supervisors, didn’t come in on snowshoes this time. He reports that Antelope Grade was in good condition and Willow Creek was blooming like a rose again. With an abundance of water, he predicted everyone would have good crops this year.

125 years ago

Several Native Americans came to Susanville with some fine trout from Pyramid Lake. The fish weighed between two and six pounds each, and residents considered them a great treat and change of pace from beef, pork and bacon.

The road from Hall and Snyder’s Mill to the bridge over the river and into Toad Town was in a bad way and there is so much waterfall over the county that it is almost impossible to repair it until the river goes down a good deal.

If each county resident gave $500 for the relief of widows and orphans of World War I, Scott McArthur, of Standish, agreed to donate the same amount. It is not known how much money the relief-drive generated.

Remember When for April 7, 2015

125 years ago

A slight shock from an earthquake visited Susanville about 6:30 a.m. one morning. It shook the tinware in Alexander’s store and the nerves of many residents.

And, the Susan River overflowed its banks down at the bridge just below Hall and Snyder’s mill. The backwater cut a channel around the old blacksmith’s shop across to the other arm of the river.

125 years ago

Tom Dennin said some unprincipled sportsman put giant powder in the creek near his Mountain Meadow ranch last winter and made sad havoc among the trout. Dennin said his creek used to be the best trout stream in the country, but with such acts of vandalism, it could be worthless as a fishing ground.
