Board denies teachers’ job share appeal

June 4, 2013 — ”Shame,” “shame,” “shame,” whispered one teacher when two fellow educators’ job share denials remained in effect after an appeal hearing.

Sixth-grade teacher Jamie Huber and second-grade teacher Jodi Neuenschwander had requested to be part of an 80/20-job share where they work four days a week and another teacher works the fifth day for next year.

 

College foundation holds raffle for vocational scholarships

WoodsplxaStudents in the Lassen Community College welding class made this wood splitter that will be raffled off for vocational scholarships.

June 4, 2013 — The Lassen College Foundation is raffling a custom-made wood splitter to raise funds for vocational scholarships. The first inaugural vocational fundraiser will benefit the college’s welding technology students.

The raffle will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at the Lassen County Fair. JDX will perform the drawing and announce the winner.

June 3, 2013 — Two men were arrested and more than 1,300 marijuana plants were seized during a search warrant execution near Little Valley on Sunday, June 2.

  

New camp offers performance opportunities for local youth

June 2, 2013 — Is your child a budding singer, actor and/or dancer? Lassen County now has an overnight summer camp just for them! Two best friends from Sparks, Nev. put their heads together and came up with a performing arts summer camp for children in fifth through 12th grade. Camp Star Bound will be held at Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake from June 30 to July 6.

According to its website, Camp Star Bound provides children an opportunity to improve their performing arts skills in the areas of singing, acting and dancing.  The camp also provides a supportive environment and uses the challenges of outdoor group living to promote individuality and improve self-confidence.

  

Murder trial will not be heard in Lassen County

May 31, 2013 — Two defendants charged with the murder of an off-duty Susanville city police officer Robert McElrath will not be tried in Lassen County.

On Friday, May 31, Judge John T. Ball granted a change of venue request made by the attorneys of Joanna Lynne McElrath and Robin Glen James.

Ball said the evidence was overwhelming and the case cannot be tried in this county due to the prejudicial publicity.
