An article said the location offered relaxing and cool surroundings and some of the most fertile farmland west of the Rockies.

Residual weather activity from hurricane Clyde, which swept through Baja, Calif. and just missed Los Angeles, brought severe thunderstorms to the eastern Sierras. Lightning from the storms sparked numerous mountain fires, threatened livestock and charred countless residences.

 

Remember When for Aug. 7, 2012

115 years ago

After hundreds of wildcats and coyotes were poisoned to secure human existence in the Honey Lake Valley, farmers had to constantly battle pesky jackrabbits. Packs of them were known to destroy single crops in less than a week. The newspaper encourages young men to help the farmers by hunting jackrabbits instead of playing baseball.

 

Remember When for July 31, 2012

115 years ago

It was announced that Susanville would be one of the stops on a proposed extension of the Great Northern Railroad. The new route would connect Butte, Mont. through Boise, Idaho to San Francisco. It was reported many residents had long awaited the decision and coupled with the government’s proposed enlargement of the post office, businesses were anticipating an increase in revenue.
