Elton was wrong: ‘Goodbye’ seems to be the hardest word

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 — Adios! Au revoir! Ciao! Arrivederci! Catch you on the flip side!
As you may have gathered, I’m saying goodbye.
Starting next week, I’ll be working at the county’s Public Health Agency and couldn’t be more excited.
For the last three years, I’ve had the privilege of reporting on the happenings of Plumas County. It has been a wild ride, but eventually, all rides must come to an end.
During my final days here, I’m trying to find a balance between my excitement for a new chapter in life and the sadness that comes with ending this one.

Ken Shamrock – The World’s Most Entertainerous Man

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 — I almost fell out of my chair when I heard Susanville’s Ken Shamrock, The World’s Most Dangerous Man — climbs back into the Mixed Martial Arts octagon to fight Kimbo Slice in St. Louis, Missouri on Friday, June 19. Yes, Bellator 138: “Unfinished Business” on Spike TV.
I remember a somber interview I did with Shamrock at the old Lassen County Times building on Gay Street nearly a decade ago a few days after the UFC Hall of Famer’s third and final fight against Tito Oritz — one Ortiz won by a technical knockout, a fight some contend the referee stopped way too early. The bout between the two bitter rivals drew the UFC’s largest television audience to that date. Tickets to the live event sold out in just two days.

Democracy works best when the public and government engage

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 — At this point, no one knows what the Susanville City Council will finally decide regarding the cultivation of medical marijuana within the city limits, but everyone involved recognizes it’s their call.
The police chief, the planning commission and the city council held a series of public meetings with growers in an attempt to balance the needs of patients who have received a recommendation from their doctor to grow and/or use the plant to alleviate their medical issues and the needs of their neighbors who see the weed as a public nuisance and moral corruptor that could lead to increased crime rates and lower property values at worst and an overwhelming and nauseating stink at best.

Make special summer memories with your children

Tuesday, June 9, 2015 — When I was growing up, summer was a time when you rarely wore shoes; it was a time to make homemade ice cream; a time to drive to the Cosumnes River about three miles from home to swim after dinner; it was fair time, and we would go as a family to the El Dorado County Fair and the California State Fair.
Vacation from obligations at school creates a perfect opportunity to schedule family activities that result in special memories that last a lifetime.
I was reminded of the importance of family time while reading a few essays penned by students at Fletcher Walker Elementary School for a writing contest. One author remembered a long drive to grandma’s for Thanksgiving and waking early to the smell of waffles and bacon; another wrote about a trip to the San Francisco Zoo; a third had camped by the ocean on California’s north coast.

Congratulations and our best wishes to the Class of 2015

Tuesday, June 9, 2015 — Follow your passion and don’t be afraid to fail — that’s the advice salty-tongued Oscar winner Robert De Niro gave recently as he addressed the graduates at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
Yes, these graduates are future actors, dancers, writers, directors, photographers and filmmakers who De Niro acknowledged won’t find the same job opportunities as those who completed studies in other fields such as nursing or accounting, but life is always about the choices we make.
“You discovered a talent, developed an ambition and recognized your passion,” De Niro said. “When you feel that, you can’t fight it, you just go with it. When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense. You aren’t just following dreams, you’re reaching for your destiny.”
