President Woodrow Wilson announced the federal government was taking control of the nation’s railroad system. Every line engaged in general transportation, including steamship lines, would be used to assist the Army during World War I. Lassen County had only two railroads engaged in heavy traffic.

 

Remember When for Dec. 18, 2012

90 years ago

Frank B. Dursoe, secretary of the Chico Chamber of Commerce, has been in Susanville in the interest of building a road connecting with the Susanville Red Bluff lateral of the state highway system to Chester.

The proposed road will be built through Deer Creek pass. The usual claim that it will be open year-round was made. Butte County proposed to finance the building of the road and the Forestry Department will be asked to appropriate funds as well.

 

Remember When for Dec. 11, 2012

90 years ago

More than 3,000 tons of sugar beets were shipped from Honey Lake Farms to a processing plant in Fallon, Nev. The load was less than one-third of the amount expected to be shipped. Farmers cited excessively hot summer temperatures as the cause for the depleted crop.

 

Remember When for Dec. 4, 2012

90 years ago

The Lassen County chapter of the Red Cross participated in a nationwide quest to enlist Red Cross members to help increase tuberculosis awareness. All members were given a flag to be hung at their doorsteps. To signify the effort, members were encouraged to place candles in their windowsills and ring toll bells at 7:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
