Here are some thoughts on some of the recent activities.

There are concerns over the situation that juveniles allegedly conspired to assault a man leaving him with injuries severe enough to send him to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

It is sobering , but we commend the Susanville Police Department for its investigation and quick arrests.

We also commend the work done by law enforcement, the district attorney and defense counsel in bringing resolution in the shootingthat occurred Saturday, May 5 and resulted in the death of a man.

In other news, there have been a few personnel changes in the city and county departments.

The city council and board of supervisors acknowledged the work of those in interim positions by making them permanent.

The city council named Tom Downing as chief of police and the supervisors waived its open recruitment policy and hired Melody Brawley as the director of Lassen County Health and Social Services.

Both Downing and Brawley bring knowledge and experience that will no doubt give them success at their jobs.

As another school year winds down, we are reminded of the bright and talented students in our county, some of who arealready making a difference.

Kudos to Lassen High School sophomore Garrison Collier for being accepted into the Naval Academy’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program. Congratulations to the Susanville FFA’s Parliamentary Procedure team who took third place at the state finals.

Diamond View School students have received national recognition and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for their simple but captivating skit about the importance of hand washing.

Public health departmenteducator Bethany DuVarney and public health nurse Christi Myers were also recognized for their efforts in the program. Congratulations to everyone.

Local organizations have also been awarding scholarships and givingawards to students to help them further their education.And to help further the cause of helping women and children, the Soroptimists International of Susanville provided a new fun event with its Margarita Fest.

Money will go toward its scholarship and award programs, self-esteem workshops for girls as well as assisting Lassen Family Services.

In closing, kudos to the Lassen County Office of Education on another successful Children’s Fair.
