Memorial Day weekend accident claims man’s life

May 29, 2012 — In the afternoon of Friday, May 25, emergency personnel responded to a single vehicle accident on Highway 36, east of Morgan Summit that claimed the life of a Petaluma man.

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Moise Joseph Cortez, Jr., 52.

According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Cortez was traveling eastbound on Highway 36 at approximately 78 miles per hour in his 2004 Chevrolet 2500 pickup.

Cortez entered a left hand curve as a marked CHP vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction. Upon seeing the patrol vehicle, CHP said Cortez swerved to the right across the gravel shoulder and collided with the hillside.

Now out of control, the vehicle traveled back across the roadway and down an embankment where it collided with a tree, overturned and came to rest on its roof.

CHP said due to the extensive damage and the position of the vehicle, Cortez was trapped inside, which prevented him from getting out or emergency medical personnel from assisting him.

Cortez who was wearing his seatbelt, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The CHP unit must have recorded Cortez' speed with RADAR in order to have it at 78 MPH. At least the TO can write that crash as a short-form report instead of the longer Investigation form, since he witnessed it happen.

Joe's tragic death has left his family, freinds, and coworkers in shock. This could of been any of us. I'm sure Joe did not realize his speed until he saw the CHP officer. This something most of us have experienced without this tragic result.
Joe, Your PG&E family will miss you

It is very frightening to be driving at your own leisure and then out of no where, You come accross a CHP. The first thing a person doe,s is punch the brake. Sad to think that it caused Mr. Cortez his life.Rest in sleep Sir, Rest in sleep.

Moise(Joe) was a great person and a neighbor of my family and I. He was on vacation to go fishing at Eagle Lake which he loved to do before flying out to see his grandchild for the first time. He will be greatly missed.
