Update: The fire that burned a bridge in Susanville Ranch Park on May 18 is still under investigation, according to Calfire Chief Jim Barry. If anyone has information about the fire, call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 257-4171.

May 29, 2012 — An early morning run in Susanville Ranch Park turned into a 911 call to local authorities. While the case is still under investigation, the unofficial cause of the fire is arson.

At approximately 5 a.m. Friday, May 18, local residents Camille Buehler and Sue Cooper arrived at Susanville Ranch Park and immediately noticed a glow coming from the vicinity of the bridge that connects Old Paul Bunyan Road to the meadow.

Buehler said they immediately called 911 and then began walking toward the source of the glow. As they got closer they realized the bridge was on fire and the flames were getting bigger by the minute.

“It was very scary because it was just getting bigger and bigger and we were waiting for the fire trucks to come,” said Buehler. “I’ve never been so close to flames like that.”

According to Joel Rathje, trails coordinator for Lassen County, the bridge is totaled. In his opinion, the bridge burnt hot and fast which could not have happened without an accelerant.

“This is a big deal,” said Rathje. “The bridge can be replaced. What I’m concerned about is that someone is capable of this and they are still out there.”

The fire did not spread any further than the bridge thanks to it being directly over Piute Creek and because there were no trees and only green bushes nearby. Rathje said because the fire was reported early and Calfire got right on it, it didn’t get as bad as it could have.

Originally built by local Boy Scouts, the rebuilding of the bridge is already in the works. Rathje said a younger brother of a Boy Scout who worked on the bridge in the past, wants to rebuild the bridge for his Eagle Scout project.

I realize alot of people get mad at me for using the word THUG. But come on folk,s. This is our town and why let people like this destroy our hard work? Now a new bridge has to be built and that cost time and money. What if the fire was not discovered in time? Remember the fire of 2001? I do.

Speaking of fires, what is going on with the Black Bear diner?
Seems there are only three types of people left in Lassen now: 1.Government Employees, 2. Parolees, 3. Prisoners. The last of the independent ranchers and farmers left last year. Just look at all the ranches listed for sale. Sad.

That is so sad. All ages enjoy the Susanville Ranch Park and for some it will make it more difficult to get too. I know there is more than one entrance to the park, but that is easiest for those with walking difficulties. Hope it can be rebuilt before winter sets in.

Hopefully, The Local Boy Scout,s will build a much nicer bridge. It is sad that there are people out there who do not appreciate the beauty in the Susanville Ranch Park. It is such a lovely serene attraction. Once again, It is nice to see other warm heart,s pull together in a time of need.

If certain people/person in positions of authority would properly address and handle the GANGS and riff raff coming in from the prisons, our problem wouldnt be so out of control. I grew up here and yes, its getting bad. Our protecters need to squash this stuff. PRO-ACTIVE CRIME FIGHTING!
