Our elected officials need to reside in Lassen County

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 — Despite the clear and unambiguous requirement in state law that elected officials must reside in the district they represent, the residency of some elected officials draws questions and raises concerns from county and city residents from time to time.
During the past 15 years the residency of elected officials on the Susanville City Council, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors and the Lassen Municipal Utility District has been questioned. None of those officials has ever been charged with a crime — until now.
Earlier this month Lassen County District Attorney Stacey Montgomery announced she has charged Daniel Schlueter, Lassen County’s Assessor, with six felonies — five felony counts of perjury and one felony count of voter registration fraud — regarding his residency in the county and thus his qualification to hold elected office.

Marriage brings sharing of passions that enrich life

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 — This morning I began thinking about the reasons we like what we do. Such a thought was prompted by the way I spent my time Saturday morning, July 11. I was up at 4 a.m. driving from my sister’s house in Gardnerville, Nevada, to Markleeville, California where my husband, Terry, planned to start the Death Ride. His desire to climb as many as five mountain passes throughout the day on a bicycle was shared by hundreds of likeminded cyclists.

Their red flashing taillights (lights are required on bikes if cyclists start the course before sunup) could be seen for miles along the course. My husband was on his bike by 5:30 a.m., slipping into a jersey and cycling shoes; checking the air in his tires; and strapping on a helmet in a parking area with many other cyclists who had picked Markleeville as their starting point.

Local songwriter takes a shot at Nashville

Tuesday, July 21, 2015 — One of these days someone I know is really going to hit the big time. I’ve felt it on and off for years, and I just can’t wait until it actually happens. There have been contenders, that’s for sure.
For example, my friends The Rubinoos from Berkeley came pretty darn close in the late 1970s early 1980s — they just missed the top-40 (No. 45) with a remake of the Tommy James song, “I Think We’re Alone Now,” were featured in the teeny-bopper magazines such as “Tiger Beat,” were the claymation figures and the live band in Rolling Stone’s 10th anniversary television special, toured Europe and the states as the opening act for Elvis Costello and wrote the title song and another for the movie, “Revenge of the Nerds.”
Why Todd Rundgren (“Hello, It’s Me”) even produced one of their albums (he also produced records for Badfinger, The Band, Grand Funk Railroad, Meat Loaf, The New York Dolls, Hall and Oates and XTC, don’t you know).

Bluegrass festival sends me on a journey of discovery

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 — I love the crazy things I get to ponder because I have a musician’s sensibilities. A case in point — the recent Susanville Bluegrass Festival relaunched my interest in traditional Irish music — not that bluegrass is especially Irish, but the music of the Emerald Isle can be found at the core of the bluegrass tradition — the fiddle tunes, various varieties of jigs (double jigs, slip jigs, slide jigs, etc.), reels, clog dances, hornpipes and even, I kid you not, polkas. Now take a deep breath — I have no fantasy about becoming a master of those old fiddle tunes on guitar — I have neither the hands nor the necessary inclination, but I still remain fascinated by the music just the same.
