Susanville man arrested on murder charge

Sunday, May 6 — According to the Susanville Police Department (SPD), a 36-year-old man died from a gunshot wound received during an alleged altercation at a city residence in the early morning of Saturday, May 5.

In a press release from the SPD, the victim has been identified as Jason Theodore Hamel, 36, of Susanville.

The alleged suspect, Darreck Gene Bloem, 23, was arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail on charges of murder and the use of a firearm in the course of a crime. He is being held on a $600,000 bail.

According to the press release, the police department is in the early stages of the investigation. If anyone has any information about the incident, they are encouraged to call the SPD at 257-2171.

At approximately 1:35 a.m. Saturday, May 5, officers were dispatched to a residence in the 500 block of Wildwood Way on a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive man in the entryway of the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the torso. The victim was identified as Hamel and he was initially transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center via ambulance and was subsequently airlifted to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nev. Hamel ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died Saturday morning.

According to the press release, during the course of the initial investigation, officers learned Hamel and another subject identified as Bloem may have had an altercation at a business earlier in the evening.

For unknown reasons at this time, Hamel allegedly went to Bloem’s residence and another altercation ensued, resulting in Hamel being shot.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office assisted the police department at the scene. The police department expresses their gratitude for their help.

Chief Tom Downing is starting off to a big test as our new Police Chief. There was a time in Susanville, When murder was hardly ever heard of. Now it seems we have no other choice but to lock our door,s at night and even in the day.I hope he understand,s. His job is an important factor to us...

Sounds like self defense to me. Bloem should not be in jail for protecting himself and family.

I dont see how anyone can say its self defense when no one knows the whole story. This only shows that a gun dose not settle things. If your having a problem with some one call the police thats what they are there for.

We dont know if Jason was invited over there or went to say he was sorry or just what the facts are. This was wrong I dont care how you look at it. You should never take the law in your own hands and if you do then you should be dealt with.

He could have not opened the door and called the police. There are so many options besides killing someone. Its people who think like you that makes this world so unsafe to live in.

You dont know how this was played out so how can you say self defense? Just because he was there you dont know why or how and neither does anyone else. I dont care how it all came about this was so wrong in so many ways

. This is why I dont think people should have guns they are trigger happy and think killing is fine....KILLING is not fine no matter how it all came down. Stay in your house and call the police.

Thats how it should have been. We as people have no right to go around killing each other for any reason. Thats the problem with this world today. Hot headed people with guns.

Like my father-in law said years ago we fought knocked each other down then we offered a hand up hugged and said now lets have a drink. That being a man. But not anymore now we only think of killing and being macho.

If your so afraid for your life why would you even open the door. Shows this was planned to kill thats how I see it. It wasnt self defense when only one man had a gun. How is that self defense? hands against a gun...how fair is that. I am sorry Brady but I so disagree with your thinking.

Anyone who can say this was justified is so wrong. No one should take it upon himself to be judge, jury and executioner I am sorry thats just wrong. This man had a family would you look into his kids eyes and say your Dad deserved what he got.

How cold can one person be. Its small minds and guns who ruin our world. Guns are for hunting and for men protecting our countries not young men with bad judgement
