Fire on Cheney Creek Road
UPDATE: 10:59 a.m. July 12, 2013 — Two young adults were arrested after an investigation into a brush fire that broke out on Cheney Creek Road about 8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, according to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s office.
After witnesses reported a loud bang prior to the fire starting, Calfire investigators discovered the source of the ignition at the scene.
It was ascertained one or more people created some type of exploding device using materials from fireworks and a regular soda bottle. Additionally, officials located a vehicle witnesses claimed fled the scene.
Susanville residents Kyle Potter, 19, and Alexandria Dallimore, 18, were charged with unlawfully causing a fire and possession of an exploding device. They were booked into the Lassen County Jail on $10,000 bail.
According to Calfire Captain J.T. Silvera, the fire burned three-fourths of an acre but was contained just before 9 p.m.
“When you see flames, that’s when you get worried,” said Jim Mears, who could see the flames and smoke from his house and can remember past fires in the same area.
He and other residents on South Street stood in their yards as emergency personal rushed past homes to access the fire.
Emergency responders included Susanville City Fire Department, Calfire, Janesville Fire Department, Susan River Fire Protection District, the Lassen County sheriff’s office and the Susanville Police Department.
