Fire destroys Herlong house, deputy responding to incident hits deer
Wednesday, July 10 — A late evening structure fire had fire personnel and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responding to Tamarack Street in Herlong July 6.
According to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, the residence was fully involved upon arrival, and the fire eventually burned a large portion of the home. All of the people got out of the residence safely, but two dogs died.
Due to the suspicious nature of the fire, the sheriff’s office and Calfire personnel were called in to investigate.
A preliminary investigation determined the fire was started in one of the bedrooms where a child was playing with some type of ignition device. This ignition caused items within a bedroom to catch fire and continue to burn throughout the home.
The investigation is ongoing and will be referred to the appropriate agency when completed.
While responding to the incident, a deputy from the South County area struck a deer, resulting in an airbag deployment. The deputy sustained minor injuries and the patrol car appears to be a total loss.
