Sheehy was flown from Modoc to Lassen County Wednesday, June 19. The Honor Guard, consisting of various natural resource agencies, was also in attendance. Sheehy was a member of the California Smokejumpers out of Redding and died June 10 while fighting a fire in Modoc County. John Heil III, regional press officer for the Forest Service said, “It’s a lot of deep grief for the Forest Service and the entire firefighter community … it’s a real devastating loss and everyone’s grieving right now.” Sheehy’s parents accompanied him on the smokejumper airplane he used and friends and family members gathered with them at the airport. “Our sympathies and heartfelt grief go out to the Sheehy family,” Heil said.
