June 12, 2013 — Set in the beautiful landscape of the Lassen County Fairgrounds, the upcoming Susanville Bluegrass Festival provides a unique, summer event for locals and music enthusiasts alike.
The festival begins Thursday, June 20 and ends Sunday, June 23. Thirteen bluegrass bands will highlight the year’s event which gains popularity every year.
Kaelie Pena, of the fair office, said, “This is the most we’ve had and we’re expecting bigger attendance.”
People can come hear the Jeanette Williams Band, featuring the award winning songwriter; The Anderson Family, which boasts four children showcasing their bluegrass talents; Frank Solivan and the Dirty Kitchen whose music has a wide array of influences woven in and Natural Drift whose first CD released in 2008 received rave reviews
The Bluegrass Festival draws people from out of area and according to Pena, enthusiasts are starting to add the local event to their festival route.
Many who attend take advantage of the camping opportunities at the fairgrounds. Campers can start setting up Monday, June 17.
Festival-goers set up chairs to enjoy the bands’ songs and when the musicians aren’t playing, campers go from campsite to campsite for their own pickin’ and grinnin’ fun.
New this year are music classes offered for beginning and intermediate musicians and songwriters wishing to learn more about singing, songwriting, banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle and bass.
Bluegrass musicians will help teach the classes, which start Tuesday, June 18 and end Thursday. Students will have the opportunity to play for the audience during the festival
Pena said students who sign up for the music classes will receive a four-day pass to the festival.
Food, craft and instrument vendors will take advantage of setting up booths and a large, air conditioned room with the music piped in will be available for quilters to work.
The Chris Gardner Band will help kick off the event with a concert scheduled on Wednesday, June 19.
Other featured musicians are Bluegrass Etc., Dan Crary, Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players, Susie Glaze and Hilonewsome, Rock Ridge and Red Dog Ashy, Pine Ridge, Eight Dollar Mountain.
Cliff Compton will provide a special Sunday morning set.
Tickets will be sold each day of the festival but presale tickets for both the Chris Gardner Band concert and the festival are available through Tuesday, June 18. Order forms for presale tickets, the music classes or camping reservations are available at lassencountyfair.org.
