Operation Safe Boat event, May 25
May 21, 2013 — The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office Boating Safety and Enforcement Unit, the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, the California Highway Patrol (CHP), PG&E and the US Forest Service will be conducting a joint agency Water Safety day, to coincide with National Safe Boating Week. It will be held Saturday, May 25 at Lake Almanor.
Voluntary boating safety equipment inspections conducted by US Coast Guard Auxiliary and Plumas County Sheriff’s Boat Patrol personnel to ensure boaters have all of the required US Coast Guard safety equipment will be the primary focus of this safety day.
The CHP will also be looking at trailers to ensure they are properly equipped and safe to operate on the highway. Boating safety items such as personal flotation devices (life jackets), type iv throwable (seat cushions), fire extinguishers, sound making devices, operational navigation lighting and engine/fuel enclosure requirements will be examined. Boat owners can go to the US Coast Guard website, cgaux.org/vsc/, or read the California ABC of Boating Book to see what the requirements are and to be prepared for the inspection.
The inspections will be conducted at the public boat ramp at Almanor North Campground and possibly at the Canyon Dam boat ramp if the dock has been replaced.
Representatives from the various organizations may also have informational booths set up. There will be handout materials and some free items available for the public.
Fifteen minutes of your time could save your life or someone on your boat.
If you have any questions, call the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office at 283-6375 and ask to speak with a member of the sheriff’s boat patrol.
