Sportsmen’s Club hosts annual fishing derby
April 15, 2013 — Memorial Park will come alive at 5 a.m. Saturday, April 20, when hundreds of children ages 2 to 15 take up fishing poles in hopes of catching a prized trout in the Susan River. Due to conflicts between young anglers and adults when the event was held on fishing season’s opening day back in the 1980s, a special dispensation from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife permits the derby the week before the regular season opens. Susanville is the only city in the state allowed to hold such an event.
Participants should register/check in between 5 and 9 a.m. Susanville Supermarket IGA and Morning Glory Dairy will provide free breakfast for children from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m., which will include donuts, fruit, hot chocolate and juice. Coffee will be available for purchase.
From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. a free lunch — hot dogs, chips and soda, donated by Frosty Mill, D&L Distributing, Rainbow Bread, Burger King and Grocery Outlet — will be offered to all participants. Adults may purchase breakfast and/or lunch.
The derby will conclude at 2:45 p.m. and prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. after all participants have registered their catch. The following prizes will be given to the boy and girl with the largest fish in two age categories:
Ages 2 to 5 — first place, bicycle donated by Leslie’s Jewelry and US Bank; second place, fishing rod and reel donated by Western Nevada Supply; third place, tackle box donated by Larry’s Spirit Gas.
Ages 6 to 15 — first place, bicycle donated by Billington Ace Hardware; second place, fishing rod and reel donated by Western Nevada Supply; third place, tackle box donated by Larry’s Spirit Gas.
Additional donations and prizes are provided by Eleanora Hall, Lassen Addressing, Pete Talia, the Dieter family, Bill Kauffman, Walgreens, Pizza Factory, Elegant Iris & Men’s Den and Sierra Theater.
Fish planting sponsors include Lassen County Fish and Game Commission; Supervisors Jim Chapman, Bob Pyle and Larry Wosick; Susanville City Council; C & S Waste; Western Nevada Supply; and Susanville Indian Tribal Office.
Volunteers are needed to help with the event. For more information about volunteering and the Lassen Sportsmen’s Club, call Jim Chapman at 251-6828.
