Officials investigate inmate death
Monday, Feb. 25 — Law enforcement officials are investigating the Sunday, Feb. 24 death of an inmate as a homicide, according to a press release from High Desert State Prison (HDSP).
An unidentified 26-year-old inmate was found unresponsive in his cell about 7:05 Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead at 8 a.m.
HDSP is withholding the inmate’s identity pending the notification of the next of kin. The inmate arrived at HDSP April 10, 2012 after being convicted in Yolo County of sodomy with a child under the age of 14. He was serving a 22-year sentence.
His unidentified cellmate, who has been identified as the suspect, was retained in the Administrative Segregation Unit pending investigation of the incident.
The 40-year-old cellmate arrived at HDSP from Los Angeles County Nov. 15, 2010. He is serving a 110-year to life sentence for first-degree murder and unlawful sex with a victim under the age of 16.
The Investigative Services Unit at HDSP, the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office, the Susanville Police Department and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
The Office of Inspector General’s Bureau of Independent Review has been notified.
