Driver loses control on icy highway

Jan. 28, 2013 — A Nevada resident was trapped in his vehicle and sustained moderate injuries after losing control of his pickup truck on Highway 395, north of Laver Crossing in Doyle, Saturday, Jan. 26.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the accident occurred at 8:38 a.m. when Robert Vieira, 71, was traveling northbound on the highway in his 2008 Ford F-350 at an unsafe speed for the icy conditions.

The CHP said there was dense fog in the area, and the roadway, still frozen from the cold snap the week before, was covered with a layer of clear ice.

Vieira lost control and his vehicle spun out, crossed the southbound lanes and left the west side of the roadway where it overturned in the ditch. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels in the field, according to the CHP.

Vieira sustained moderate injuries and was trapped inside his vehicle until rescue personnel arrived. He was transported to Renown Medical Center in Reno via ambulance.

The CHP said there were numerous ice-related collisions in the area that morning and reminds all motorists to reduce their speed when visibility is poor and when the roadway is wet or icy.

“It is your responsibility to drive at a safe speed for conditions regardless of the posted speed limit. Slow down for your safety and the safety of others,” the CHP said.

Great job CALTRANS, you can't even prevent something you knew was going to happen (icing?)
Time for some early CALTRANS retirement up here!
