Burglary investigation leads to arrest of three people

Dec. 12, 2012 — An investigation into a Westwood burglary led to the arrest of three people on charges of possession of stolen property.

According to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO), Leroy Cowan was also arrested on charges of felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. He and Mary Renee Bungarz were also charged with child endangerment.

A few days later, another subject, Sean Chappell, of Westwood, was arrested after allegedly being found in possession of property taken from two burglaries.

The LCSO said on Nov. 29, a deputy contacted a Westwood resident and told the man he believed his rental properties were burglarized.

Upon their arrival, the property owner noticed several items missing from inside an unsecured garage on the property including children’s toys. A 12-volt battery was missing from a Toyota Land Cruiser parked outside. Multiple other items were missing from the residence.

Later that evening, the property owner contacted the LCSO and positively identified a white security screen door behind the home belonging to Cowan. A deputy responded to the area and saw the door leaning against a travel trailer behind Cowan’s residence.

The LCSO obtained a search warrant and executed it at Cowan’s residence. They located multiple items — clothing, games and other personal items — the victim reported as missing.

Deputies also found items from another burglary reported the same day at a nearby residence.

The case has been referred to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

I dont care if jerks put a negative responce toward me. I am glad to be on the good side of Law Enforcement. It is people like this that ruin the trust in our community. They steal, rather then go get a honest job. Even if they flipped burgers for McDonalds. It is honest work, instead of stealing.
