Nov. 24, 2012 — A fundraiser dinner is being held to help keep Coppervale Ski Area operating this winter.

The dinner fundraiser will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at the Lassen Community College (LCC) Student Union on Highway 139.

The cost of the dinner is $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 years old or less. The menu includes Alfredo pasta, grilled chicken, salad and a roll. In addition to the dinner there will be a raffle and silent auction.

Located 18 miles west of Susanville on Highway 36, Copppervale Ski Area offers downhill and cross country skiing and snowboarding opportunities. It features eight trails, a terrain park and a half-pipe.

According to Norm Wilson, Coppervale Ski Area manager, “everybody up and down Main Street” has donated items for the raffle and silent auction, as well as food and merchandise.

Wilson said Coppervale was funded by LCC when the college offered classes for credit, but now classes are only offered as a community service so Coppervale doesn’t receive that funding.

Money from the fundraiser will go toward operating costs including insurance and lift inspections.

According to lcc.edu, Susanville and Westwood citizens established Coppervale Ski Area as a club in the 1930s. The original lift was a rope tow run off the rear wheels of a car chained to the top of the mountain. The first person up in the morning hiked up the hill with gas and started the engine.

In the 1960s, LCC took control of the ski area and the rope tow engine was moved to the bottom of the hill and modifications, including a new engine, were made.

A Poma lift was installed in 1977 allowing service to the summit and giving skiers almost 740 feet of a vertical drop.

this slope is closed way more than it is open- it just does not snow as much as it used to.
Why do you think the Dwyer Mountain Resort went bankrupt before breaking ground?
I would suggest we put ALL our efforts and limited resources into a SWIMMING POOL.
